Date fruit is grown on a Date palm tree, and it should be no surprise that they thrive only in hot dry climates. In the Old World, the near East and Africa are the regions where dates are grown in large quantities.

Date trees typically reach about 21–23 metres (69–75 ft) in height, growing singly or forming a clump with several stems from a single root system. Date fruits (dates) are oval-cylindrical, 3–7 cm (1.2–2.8 in) long, and about an inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, ranging from bright red to bright yellow in color, depending on variety. They are very sweet, containing about 75 percent of sugar when dried.

Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East and the Indus Valley for thousands of years. There is archaeological evidence of date cultivation in Arabia from the 6th millennium BCE. The total annual world production of dates amounts to 8.5 million metric tons, countries of the Middle East and North Africa being the largest producers.

In recent years Iran is one of the leading Countries in Date production in the world, with annual production of about 900000 metric tons. Date palm is grown mainly in South, South East, and South West of the Iran. There exists a good opportunity and a large potential for trade in this commodity in Iran. In areas where frosts do not occur the Date palm is the most characteristic representative of irrigation agriculture.

There is different kinds of Iranian Date fruit which as have been mentioned. Iran has diversity in weather situation which can cultivate most kinds of Date fruits such as Mazafati (Kimia), Piarom, Zahedi, Kabkab, Rabbi, Shahabi, Khasoei, Shahani and Sayer.

MAZAFATI FRESH DATES This fresh date grows in Kerman area. Their color is brown to black, with an extra soft. Natural soft caramel and chocolate reminder could be a description of the taste of this delicious fruit. The Mazafati is one of the most famous and best tasting varieties of dates Excellent to eat as they are, in addition of smoothies, for an original sauce salad or part of a main meal. This kind is wet and its color can vary from light brown to dark brown.

The Piarom date also known as Marayami dates are a round, black-brown date that is widely considered the most delicious of all semi-dry date varieties. Most Piarom dates are produced in the vicinity of Hajjiabad, Hormozgan in southern Iran.

 Zahedi Dates is one the dry varieties of the date in most regions of Iran, however, in some regions it is known as a semi-dried date. It is also called as Ghasab in some areas of Iran.The date is produced in Khuzestan, Fars, Booshehr and Kermanshah provinces, but the main production is in a region called Poshtkooh in Bushehr Province.the Date is dry fruit with yellow color ,meaty and so delicious which its moisture is less than other kinds of Date fruits. Zahedi Date is not sweet and because of this is suited for those who don’t like sweet taste.The Date has high Folate content which is beneficial and so necessary for blood circulation and the new medical studies has proven that Dates such as Zahedi Date work as an appetizer and is useful for health mouth and lips and can be used to relieve nervous tensions! Produced in Dashtestan located in Boshehr and Khozestan. This is dry and its color is luteous.

Kabkab Date is round in size, and the color varies from light brown to dark brown. It is soft in nature with moisture under %18. Harvest Time is Mid September. Kabkabs grow in Fars regions and used pitted or unpitted for direct consumption and/or industrial purposes. Produced in Boshehr, Fars and Yazd. It is wet and light brown.

Rabbi Date has attractive black color which is reddish black and soft texture . Rabbi Date grows in Iranshahr, Zabol, Chahbahar and Saravan cities of the Sistan and Baluchestan province. These cities are most important areas in the production of Rabbi Date in the Iran.

These dates are dark orange-brown, of medium size, soft and syrupy. The Harvest Time is October and Annual production is about 50,000 tons.
